The very earliest Mini s had a preposterous shifter as well. As did the East German Barkas B1000 , except in the opposite direction:

Also, the Land Rover lever is like that, except with the reverse on the other side, and needs to be drawn with a spring between neutral and each gear. Not sure how to represent the fact that with high miles the lever can break off at the ball.

I tried to make a pictures for a Classic Beetle gear box, but Kinja won't allow it... pretty much have the line/path to 2nd, and 4th overlapped, as when going into 2nd, your never sure if its 4th or 2nd that the gearbox will go into

This is our YJ Wrangler with the notoriously horrible Peugeot BA10/5 transmission. The shift forks are completely messed up, so you have to wiggle and then jam it into first, the "gates" for 2 and 4 are very wide, it's easy to hit 5 when you want 3, and R is way out of the way.
